Women's Clothing Styles

Women wore brilliant ball gowns and cocktail dresses that would often be sewn with rhinestones or other decorations.  Also, women would complement their outfits by wearing silk gloves and high-heels.  Women’s fashion was intended to express elegance and grace.  Because of the dancing style of the time, women’s clothes needed to be comfortable.

Men's Clothing Styles

During the Harlem Renaissance period African American men were wearing suits made of material ranging from wool to lenin.  Suits were designed in this time period to express the happiness of living.  Suits were fit to the individual and formal suits were similar of that in today’s fashion.  Zoot suits were the most outstanding style of men’s suit known for their long suit jackets and baggy-fitting pants.  They were accompanied by a hat with a feather and were the most complex part of fashion during this time period.

Fashion Accessories
Men often wore pocket watches with the chain of the watch hanging outside of the suit.  These watches served practical use but also added flare to their attire.  Men would often carry a handkerchief that matched the color of their suit.  For women’s accessories, pearl jewelry was the signature piece.  To complement their attitude, women would wear fur coats, shawls, and a ring on top of their silk glove.
