W.E.B. Du Bois and Louis Armstrong

are two innovators of the Harlem Renaissance. Du Bois is best known for his book The Souls of Black Folk, a collection of essays that present a sociological study of blacks in America and a case for why they should be given equal rights to whites.

Armstrong, while not as political as Du Bois, was able to overcome prejudice to become a star in the music world, performing before huge crowds of both blacks and whites. Armstrong later began to take a strong stand for the desegregation and integration of schools; in 1957 he called President Eisenhower "gutless and two-faced" because of his inaction in the desegregation of Little Rock. The FBI then began to keep a file on Armstrong because of his comments.
